Daniel Bard
Daniel Bard Requires meniscus surgery
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 12:51 PM
Bard (forearm) is undergoing meniscus surgery on his left knee Tuesday and is expected to begin the regular season on the injured list, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Bard finished 2023 on the injured list with a flexor strain in his right forearm and will begin 2024 in the same fashion after he suffered a torn meniscus. The 38-year-old had a 4.56 ERA and 47:49 K:BB in 49.1 innings last season and was expected to compete for the closer role during spring training. A 5-to-7 week recovery timeline means he likely won't be game ready until April.
Bradley Zimmer
Bradley Zimmer Lands in Colorado as NRI
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 2:12 PM
Zimmer signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Zimmer spent time at the Triple-A level in the Dodgers and Red Sox organizations in 2023, hitting eight homers and stealing 19 bases in 78 games. The 31-year-old has a career .631 OPS and 33.9 percent strikeout rate over parts of six major-league seasons. He'll try to win a reserve outfielder role in Colorado.
Matt Carasiti
Matt Carasiti Back in Colorado as NRI
Fri, Feb 2, 2024, 10:06 AM
Carasiti signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Jan. 29 that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Carasiti was roughed up to the tune of a 6.29 ERA and 16:11 K:BB across 24.1 frames for the Rockies last season, but they saw enough promise to bring him back for another go-round. The 32-year-old reliever figures to open the 2024 campaign at Triple-A Albuquerque.
German Marquez
German Marquez Return after All-Star break likely
Sun, Jan 28, 2024, 5:06 PM
Rockies GM Bill Schmidt said Sunday that Marquez (elbow) isn't expected to be activated from the injured list until after the All-Star break, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-May last year, so a return during the first half of 2024 was never overly likely. Marquez had a 4.95 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 150:63 K:BB over 181.2 innings during 2022 and is likely to have some limitations once back with the big club after the break.
Antonio Senzatela
Antonio Senzatela Return in 2025 likely
Sun, Jan 28, 2024, 4:58 PM
Rockies GM Bill Schmidt said Sunday that Senzatela (elbow) isn't expected to pitch for the Rockies in 2024, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last July and is expected to miss the full 2024 campaign. Schmidt indicated Senzatela could be ready for rehab games at Triple-A before the end of the season, but he isn't expected to be a factor at the major-league level.
Kris Bryant
Kris Bryant Will be regular first baseman
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 8:35 PM
Bryant is expected to be the Rockies' everyday first baseman in 2024, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Saunders notes that Bryant will also see starts at designated hitter and could play some right field, as well, but the plan is to make him the regular first baseman. Bryant has made only 30 starts at first base in his major-league career, but seven of those came in September last season after he returned from one of his many injuries. The 32-year-old contends that he's healthy now and hopefully playing a less demanding position will help keep him that way. Bryant has played in just 32 percent of the Rockies' games during his two seasons in Colorado because of a multitude of injuries.
Josh Rogers
Josh Rogers Re-ups with Rockies
Fri, Jan 26, 2024, 12:57 PM
Rogers signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Thursday.
Analysis: Rogers spent the 2023 season at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Rockies organization, posting an ugly 8.02 ERA over 30 appearances (13 starts). The 29-year-old presumably will head back to Albuquerque to start 2024 where he'll provide swingman depth.
John Curtiss
John Curtiss Invited to Rockies camp
Thu, Jan 25, 2024, 10:33 AM
Curtiss signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Curtiss underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in August but should be ready for the start of the 2024 season. The 30-year-old reliever has collected a career 3.81 ERA and 103:32 K:BB over 106.1 innings covering parts of six major-league seasons.
Lucas Gilbreath
Lucas Gilbreath Avoids arbitration
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 5:48 PM
Gilbreath (elbow) signed a one-year contract with the Rockies on Thursday, avoiding arbitration.
Analysis: Gilbreath missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March, and his absence could extend into the early part of the 2024 campaign. The 27-year-old southpaw holds a 3.78 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 85.2 career MLB innings.
Austin Gomber
Austin Gomber Settles at $3.15 million
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 3:08 PM
Gomber (back) signed a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the Rockies on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gomber finished 2023 with a 5.50 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 139 innings, but his numbers became much more respectable when pitching away from Coors Field (3.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 63.2 frames). The 30-year-old southpaw missed the final month of the season due to back inflammation, and the Rockies have yet to offer an update on his status during the offseason.
Peter Lambert
Peter Lambert Settles with Rockies at $1.25M
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 1:49 PM
The Rockies and Lambert avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.25 million contract Thursday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: Lambert receives a nice little raise in what was his first year of arbitration eligibility. The right-hander's 2023 season ended with a 5.36 ERA and biceps tendinitis, but he should be healthy for the start of spring training.
Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers Avoids arbitration with Rockies
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 1:47 PM
The Rockies and Rodgers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.2 million contract Thursday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: Rodgers had been in his second year of arbitration eligibility. The second baseman missed a large chunk of the 2023 season following shoulder surgery, but he finished strong and will be looking to build off that heading into the 2024 campaign.
Cal Quantrill
Cal Quantrill Avoids arbitration with Rockies
Wed, Jan 10, 2024, 1:35 PM
The Rockies and Quantrill avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.55 million contract, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Colorado acquired Quantrill from Cleveland back in November and it has now locked him into a contract for the 2024 campaign. The right-hander posted a disappointing 5.24 ERA and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023 but held a career 3.54 mark heading into the season. Quantrill will open 2024 in the Rockies' rotation but won't be a desirable fantasy option.
Alan Trejo
Alan Trejo Outrighted to Triple-A
Fri, Jan 5, 2024, 2:47 PM
The Rockies sent Trejo outright to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday.
Analysis: Trejo's move to Triple-A and off the 40-man roster comes as a result of Dakota Hudson signing with the Rockies on Friday. Trejo slashed .232/.288/.343 with 26 RBI across 227 plate appearances last season. However, he has historically performed significantly better in Triple-A, and he could still return to Colorado if he gets off to another hot start in the minors.
Dakota Hudson
Dakota Hudson Signs with Rox
Fri, Jan 5, 2024, 2:31 PM
Hudson signed a one-year contract with the Rockies on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Hudson was non-tendered by the Cardinals earlier in the offseason after putting up a 4.64 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with a 123:95 K:BB across the past two seasons. Signing with the Rockies should ensure Hudson remains part of a major-league rotation, but having to pitch his home games at Coors Field likely won't help his subpar statline.
Jacob Stallings
Jacob Stallings Lands in Colorado
Fri, Jan 5, 2024, 2:27 PM
Stallings signed a one-year contract with the Rockies on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Marlins non-tendered Stallings earlier this offseason after he slashed just .210/.287/.290 over 660 plate appearances for them during a two-year period. In Colorado, Stallings projects as the likely backup catcher to Elias Diaz.
Ty Blach
Ty Blach Re-signed to NRI contract
Thu, Dec 21, 2023, 5:50 PM
Colorado re-signed Blach on Thursday to a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league spring training, Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com reports.
Analysis: Adams notes that Blach had an opportunity in the Korea Baseball Organization but ultimately decided to remain in MLB-affiliated ball. The 33-year-old left-hander has struggled over the last two seasons with the Rockies, compiling a 5.66 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 79:35 K:BB in 122.1 big-league innings.
Chance Adams
Chance Adams Back with Rockies as NRI
Mon, Dec 18, 2023, 5:05 PM
Adams signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Heyman says Adams will earn a salary of $740,000 if in the big leagues. The 29-year-old missed the 2022 season following Tommy John surgery and came back in 2023 to post a 3.86 ERA and 21:10 K:BB over 32.2 innings at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Rockies organization. He will compete for a gig in the Rockies bullpen but will probably begin 2024 back at Albuquerque.
Matt Koch
Matt Koch Re-signs with Colorado
Wed, Dec 6, 2023, 1:42 PM
Koch signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: He's been given an invitation to the major league side of spring training as part of the deal. Koch appeared in 39 games for the Rockies in 2023, posting a 5.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 38.2 innings. He'll compete for a job in Colorado's Opening Day bullpen.
Jalen Beeks
Jalen Beeks Agrees to deal with Colorado
Fri, Nov 17, 2023, 10:50 PM
Beeks signed a one-year, $1.675 million contract with the Rockies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Beeks was claimed off waivers from the Rays earlier this month and is now locked into a guaranteed salary for the 2024 season. The 30-year-old left-hander holds a career 4.38 ERA with 274 strikeouts in 277.2 major-league innings and seems likely to operate in a sort of swingman role with his new club.
